The Mazda CX-9 Is Better Than Ever with the 2021 Edition

The Mazda CX-9 has always emphasized a fun-to-drive personality while never skimping on amenities and utility. The newmodel year is no different, and it welcomes several changes. Chief among them is the Carbon Edition model, which aesthetically enhances an already sporty three-row midsize crossover SUV for Newburgh, IN and Owensboro, KY drivers. The CX-9 is now available in five trim levels: Sport, Touring, Carbon Edition, Grand Touring, and Signature variants.

Performance

The Mazda CX-9 workhorse is a turbocharged 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine, which generates 250 horsepower with premium fuel and drops to 227 horsepower with regular gasoline for quick acceleration. A six-speed automatic transmission is joined to this engine. This gearbox comes with a manual shifter and a Sport mode for an exciting ride, and paddle shifters are added on the Carbon Edition and higher for gear-shifting convenience. Mazda adds G-Vectoring Control technology to adjust the engine's torque in response to steering inputs for more controlled cornering and turning. It's what makes the CX-9 a highly maneuverable vehicle for its classification.

With a peak fuel economy of 22/28 mpg, the CX-9 is one of the most fuel-efficient vehicles in its class. You can opt for Mazda's i-ACTIV all-wheel-drive system with off-road traction assist technology to maximize road grip. With the proper equipment, this vehicle can tow up to 3,500 lbs.

Interior

Although a three-row midsize crossover, the new Mazda CX-9's maximum occupancy varies by trim level. The base-level Sport includes a second-row bench-style seat, thereby ensuring a peak occupancy of seven people. The Carbon Edition and Signature swap the bench-style seat with a pair of captain's chairs to reduce maximum occupancy to six. The Touring or Grand Touring can be had as a six- or seven-seater.

Front-seat heating with a six-way power-adjustable driver's seat, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, and soft-touch cloth seat trim are all standard. Leather seating and six-way power extended to the front passenger seat appear at the Touring trim level. The Carbon Edition model gains driver-seat memory, steering-wheel, second-row heating, and front-seat cooling, and it's the only one with red-finished leather seats. Only the Signature receives plush Nappa leather trim and steering-wheel contrast stitching.

Comfort and Convenience

Remote keyless entry and push-button engine start make access and engine starting on the new Mazda CX-9 more convenient. A tri-zone automatic climate system establishes controls for the driver, front-seat passenger, and the rear-seat passengers for personalized heating and cooling preferences. For infotainment, the CX-9 combines six speakers, an AM/FM radio tuner with HD Radio technology, Bluetooth, hands-free text messaging, voice recognition, two USB ports and an audio jack for connecting mobile devices, smartphone integration via Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and a 10.2-inch touchscreen.

At the Touring trim level, the CX-9 gains remote start, a power liftgate, auto-dimming ability on the rearview mirror, and a garage-door opener. On the Carbon Edition, the auto-dimming rearview mirror is frameless, and it gains a power moonroof, a navigation system, and three months of SiriusXM Radio. The Grand Touring and Signature represent the peak of CX-9 convenience: with wireless phone charging, four additional USB ports, trial subscriptions to SiriusXM Traffic and SiriusXM Travel Link, and a 12-speaker Bose surround-sound system.

Safety

At the base level, the new Mazda CX-9 is stuffed with technologies to assist drivers in avoiding accidents. Such technologies include adaptive cruise control, pre-collision warning with automatic emergency braking and pedestrian detection, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, lane departure warning, lane-keep assist, and a rearview camera with rear parking sensors. For protection during a crash, the CX-9 provides six airbags.

The Carbon Edition introduces front parking sensors for the rearview camera, in addition to the rear parking ones. Other gains include driver attention assist and reverse automatic braking. Only the Grand Touring and Signature get a 360-degree camera, which replaces the rearview one for a surround-view perspective. Compare Mazda CX-9.
